The Bridge: The Life and Rise of Barack Obama

The Bridge: The Life and Rise of Barack Obama
David Remnick | Knopf | Pages: 672 | 2010-04-06 | ISBN : 1400043603 | PDF | 1.6 MB

No story has been more central to America’s history this century than the rise of Barack Obama, and until now, no journalist or historian has written a book that fully investigates the circumstances and experiences of Obama’s life or explores the ambition behind his rise. Those familiar with Obama’s own best-selling memoir or his campaign speeches know the touchstones and details that he chooses to emphasize, but now—from a writer whose gift for illuminating the historical significance of unfolding events is without peer—we have a portrait, at once masterly and fresh, nuanced and unexpected, of a young man in search of himself, and of a rising politician determined to become the first African-American president.

After the Gold Rush: Tarnished Dreams in the Sacramento Valley (Revisiting Rural America)

After the Gold Rush: Tarnished Dreams in the Sacramento Valley (Revisiting Rural America)
The Johns Hopkins University Press | 2007 | ISBN: 0801884977 | 328 pages | PDF | 1.9MB

"It is a glorious country," exclaimed Stephen J. Field, the future U.S. Supreme Court justice, upon arriving in California in 1849. Field's pronouncement was more than just an expression of exuberance. For an electrifying moment, he and another 100,000 hopeful gold miners found themselves face-to-face with something commensurate to their capacity to dream. Most failed to hit pay dirt in gold. Thereafter, one illustrative group of them struggled to make a living in wheat, livestock, and fruit along Putah Creek in the lower Sacramento Valley. Like Field, they never forgot that first "glorious" moment in California when anything seemed possible.
n After the Gold Rush, David Vaught examines the hard-luck miners-turned-farmers -- the Pierces, Greenes, Montgomerys, Careys, and others -- who refused to admit a second failure, faced flood and drought, endured monumental disputes and confusion over land policy, and struggled to come to grips with the vagaries of local, national, and world markets.

Their dramatic story exposes the underside of the American dream and the haunting consequences of trying to strike it rich.

The New Korea: An Inside Look at South Korea's Economic Rise

AMACOM | 2010 | ISBN: 0814414893 | 288 pages | PDF | 1,1 MB

In 1953, South Korea was rated by the U.N. as the poorest country in the world. Five decades later, it is the fifteenth largest economy. Now, South Korea's decisions on how to manage its society and its role as a modern democracy while also establishing its policy regarding reunification with North Korea will determine where the country will go in the next fifty years. "The New Korea" examines the political, economic, industrial, and societal aspects of Korea today. Will it continue to enjoy an economic boom through new industries while competing against low-wage countries like China and India? Will it return to its role as a stomping ground for other powers? And what should Westerners pay attention to in terms of investment and business opportunities? As South Korea enters the most critical phase of its journey, it is crucial that we understand the factors involving its decisions and evolution. "The New Korea" is a fascinating account of what is and may become the state of this important region.

Product Description:

WHAT IS LATENT DEMAND AND THE P.I.E.?

The concept of latent demand is rather subtle. The term latent typically refers to something that is dormant, not observable, or not yet realized. Demand is the notion of an economic quantity that a target population or market requires under different assumptions of price, quality, and distribution, among other factors. Latent demand, therefore, is commonly defined by economists as the industry earnings of a market when that market becomes accessible and attractive to serve by competing firms. It is a measure, therefore, of potential industry earnings (P.I.E.) or total revenues (not profit) if a market is served in an efficient manner. It is typically expressed as the total revenues potentially extracted by firms. The “market” is defined at a given level in the value chain. There can be latent demand at the retail level, at the wholesale level, the manufacturing level, and the raw materials level (the P.I.E. of higher levels of the value chain being always smaller than the P.I.E. of levels at lower levels of the same value chain, assuming all levels maintain minimum profitability).

Product Description:

Everyday millions of people interact with the news media and yet most of them are completely unaware of the rules of the game. The results are predictable: a few benefit from the most powerful marketing force on the planet, some suffer serious damage, others don't maximize their opportunities and the majority of folks are left wondering how they can grab a piece of the publicity prize. Their success (or lack thereof) would be so much different if only they understood the rules of the game they are playing - or having played because they don't know where to begin. This work addresses a fundamental need of all CEO's, marketing directors, politicians and other leaders: "How can I safely harness the power of the news media to send my message to the public?". It provides the answer to this question through a powerful methodology that demystifies the media process.

MVPs produce tangible and dramatic business results; they improve the people they work with and the organization in which they work. In fact, the future of your business depends on this 5 to 10 percent of its very best people. But far too often, MVPs are lost because of management missteps, or even by no management at all.

While senior executives and managers recognize that one of their most important jobs is to recruit, develop, and retain talented employees, it is critical to know their MVPs and actively manage their development and retention. But how do you identify and manage your MVPs differently from the rest of your high-talent pool?

Corporate MVPs is for senior executives, human resources professionals, and anyone in an organization who must manage this talent or who wants to learn how to become an MVP. It explains how to:

• recognize and develop MVPs • protect your critical MVP assets • increase your MVP pool through recruitment • identify, sign, and integrate MVPs from outside the company • create an attractive environment that MVPs will thrive in • recover a difficult MVP, and what to do when enough is enough

Based on in-depth interviews with senior executives and business owners, HR professionals and executive recruitment firms, and with MVPs themselves, Corporate MVPs explores what makes these talented individuals tick, how to develop and cultivate them, what it takes for someone to become an MVP, and the important role of HR in managing this key talent.

Britain and the Onset of Modernization in Brazil 1850-1914

Britain and the Onset of Modernization in Brazil 1850-1914
Cambridge University Press | January 28 1972 | 400 pages | English | ISBN : 0521096812,0521096812 | PDF | 2.8MB

This is a detailed study of British influence in Brazil as a theme within the larger story of modernization. The British were involved at key points in the initial stages of modernization. Their hold upon the import-export economy tended to slow down industrialization, and there were other areas in which their presence acted as a brake upon Brazilian modernization. But the British also fostered change. British railways provided primary stimulus to the growth of coffee exports, and since the British did not monopolize coffee production, a large proportion of the profits remained in Brazilian hands for other uses. Furthermore, the burgeoning coffee economy shattered traditional economic, social and political relationships, opening up the way for other areas of growth. The British role was not confined to economic development. They also contributed to the growth of 'a modern world-view'. Spencerianism and the idea of progress, for instance, were not exotic and meaningless imports, but an integral part of the transformation Brazil was experiencing.
